Credit Card Terms Changing
QUESTION: My wife and I have had a credit card with Citibank for over twenty years. We have excellent credit and have never missed a payment with them. Last week we were informed that the terms were being changed and our interest on the card was going from 7.9% apr to 24.9% beginning December 31. When we called and spoke to the CSR dept. we were told that we could opt out and payoff the balance of 15K. Needless to say we don't have that laying around. Is this outrageous rate increase legal? C. Brown
ANSWER: To determine if this was illegal, you would have to review the terms and conditions of your card.I suspect, that buried in the fine print, they reserve the right to increase the rate on your credit card based upon several factors.I would review those factors and determine if you indeed are subject to the increase in example, one of the factors may state that should you make any late payments on any other non-related card or debt, that they reserve the right to increase your rate to the rate in question.
